Dr. Bell will typically clip the primary flight feathers to prevent take-off, and will leave the secondary flight feathers in place to allow for safe landings in case your bird jumps down or falls. In some special cases, certain very skilled fliers will need all of their flight feathers trimmed in order to prevent flight. If you wish to keep your bird’s ability to fly, you may opt out of the wing trim, but the price of the grooming package remains the same.

Dr. Bell will file down any rough or overgrown areas on your bird’s beak with a Dremel tool and then apply a small amount of mineral oil for a smooth finish. For birds with scissor beaks, severely overgrown beaks, or other abnormalities, Dr. Bell will use the Dremel to carefully reshape your bird’s beak to bring it as close to normal as possible and restore proper chewing function. There will be an additional fee of $5-$10 for abnormal beaks, depending on the degree of severity. Some beaks may require several sessions in order to fully restore the beak shape without causing excessive stress to the bird.

Dr. Bell will carefully clip your bird’s nails and then file with a Dremel tool as needed to create a smooth surface. For birds with severely overgrown nails, the quicks may be very long and Dr. Bell may only be able to remove a small amount of toenail on the first session, but with frequent nail trims, the quick should be able to recede to a point where it is possible to cut the nails short without making them bleed.
